Environment

The Trimley Estate lies on the north shore of the River Orwell and contains within it Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Protections Areas (SPA) and wetlands of international importance.

The Estate has a well established acreage of amenity woodland, supplemented by extensive planting in the 1980s to soften the impact of dock expansion.

The area is well served by public footpaths and bridleways, all of which were significantly upgraded in the 1980s as part of the same remodelling programme.

An 81 hectare fresh water nature reserve established in 1998 (The Trimley Marsh Nature Reserve ) is operated by Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

In 2000 some 30 hectares of intertidal mud flats were created from former farmland as a result of a managed breach of the river wall.
